How do you focus on student engagement in an online learning environment?

My Managerial Accounting class features discussion boards and group assignments. Collaboration is a staple of an MBA program, and I maintain that aspect even in an online environment. I also encourage one-on-one Microsoft Teams meetings with me.

What is your favorite teaching moment or most rewarding aspect of working with students?

I love helping students prepare for their careers in accounting and business. I draw upon my experience as a practitioner to bring real-world examples to the classroom, and I strive to make learning enjoyable. The most rewarding aspect of my job is helping students achieve their goals!

I also support students at extracurricular activities like athletic events and student organization meetings. I like speaking to different groups, making connections, and helping students with career and life advice.

What is your teaching philosophy?

To maximize student learning, instructors must be flexible and able to adapt with changing student preferences. I believe that an effective teaching strategy at the MBA level should incorporate interactive discussion and collaborative team-based case studies into the course framework, as opposed to relying only on a traditional lecture-based model. Not every student learns best through listening and reading. Many prefer a more hands-on approach to learning new material.

What advice do you have for students pursuing careers in accounting?

Now is a great time to enter the accounting profession. With many CPAs retiring, there are more jobs available than qualified candidates. Pursue a CPA license – once you have it, you will be able to take care of yourself for life!
